GitHub Copilot agents: from a coding task to a reviewable change
Choose GitHub Copilot IDE plan mode, IDE agent mode, or cloud agent work by task handoff and review workflow. Based on current GitHub documentation, not a coding benchmark.
Which GitHub Copilot workflow should I use for a small, multi-step code change?
Use IDE agent mode when you want Copilot to work in your editor: GitHub says it can edit files across a project and run commands until the task is complete. If you want a plan to inspect before edits begin, use IDE plan mode first. These are documented workflows, not evidence of code quality.
When should I start the task from a GitHub issue or prompt?
Use Copilot cloud agent when you want to hand off a repository task and review the result as a branch or pull request. GitHub documents starting from an issue, a prompt, or a new repository; a prompt session can be steered with follow-ups, and you can ask it to open a pull request. GitHub currently says cloud agent is enabled by default on paid Copilot plans and is subject to repository eligibility and settings; check the linked access documentation for your account.
How does the cloud task handoff work?
For issue assignment, GitHub says Copilot receives the issue title, description, and comments present at assignment time, then creates a pull request for review. For a prompt, choose the repository and environment, describe the outcome and constraints, and track the session. Check what context is available before relying on later issue discussion.
Does a Copilot code review approve my pull request?
By default, GitHub says Copilot leaves a Comment review, which does not count toward required approvals. Treat its comments as suggestions: inspect them, verify the code yourself, run the project checks, and retain your required human review process.
What is a practical way to try these workflows?
Pick a small task with clear acceptance criteria in a repository you can restore. In the IDE, compare plan-first with direct agent mode; for cloud work, use a separate branch and ask for a pull request. Record the editor, repository settings, model/access options, date, and review steps. Inspect the diff and run the same tests yourself. This personal trial measures fit for your workflow, not general coding ability.
Does this guide establish price, availability, or coding quality?
No. Product access can vary by plan, organization policy, repository settings, and editor. Documentation describes workflow and access conditions but does not show comparative accuracy, safety, or quality. Check current GitHub documentation and your account settings before choosing.
